The best material for outdoor 3D-printed parts
Sun, rain, heat, and temperature swings are hard on plastic. If a part has to live outside or on a vehicle, the material matters more than anything else you choose. The short answer is ASA — here is why, and how the others actually hold up.
Short answer: ASA
For nearly any outdoor part, ASA is the right choice. It has the strength and heat resistance of ABS, but it was specifically engineered to be UV- and weather-stable — it keeps its color, surface, and mechanical properties through sustained sunlight, rain, and heat. That stability is exactly what the other common materials lack outdoors.
Why outdoors is hard on plastic
Three forces age an outdoor part, and they compound:
- UV light breaks down polymer chains at the surface. On materials that aren't UV-stable, that shows up as fading, chalking, and growing brittleness over months — the part looks tired, then cracks under loads it used to handle.
- Heat from direct sun (and the much higher temperatures inside a parked car or an engine bay) softens materials with low heat resistance, so parts sag, warp, or lose their fit.
- Moisture and temperature cycling — rain, humidity, and the daily swing between hot and cold — stress the part and find any weakness in layer adhesion.
How each material holds up outside

So the decision is simple: if the part sees the sun or the weather, choose ASA. PETG is a reasonable second choice for parts that mostly face moisture rather than constant sunlight — a covered fitting, or something that lives outside only briefly. ABS, PLA, and most other materials belong indoors. If your part needs to flex outdoors — a gasket, a bumper, a grommet — TPU is the material, with the understanding that flexibility, not UV life, is what it's for.
Marking and finishing for the outdoors
ASA doesn't need a protective coating to survive outside — the UV stability is built into the material, not added on top. If you want identification that lasts as long as the part, a permanent laser mark — a serial number, QR code, logo, or asset ID — becomes part of the surface, not a printed label or sticker, so it's tamper-proof and doesn't compromise the part. That combination, a weatherproof material with permanent marking, is well suited to asset tags, equipment labels, and field hardware.
